VACCINATIONS

"Puppies receive antibodies through their mothers milk. This natural protection can last 8-14 weeks.  When puppies & kittens are vaccinated before the natural immunity is gone the first vaccine suceeds in killing off the mothers natural immunity and leaving the puppy vulnerable.  What happens is maternal immunity will neutralize the vaccine and little protection (0-38%) will be produced.

Here at Mystemas Poms as we have expanded our knowledge base as we continue to broaden our education.  This has been the case with vaccinations.  We are a breeding kennel and as such must take precautions to protect our puppies.

Through further education we have developed a protocol for our breeding program and pets that works for us and protects all our babies to the best of our ability.

Studies conclusively tell us the Parvo and Distemper vaccines last at least 7.5 years, however they likely could last lifetime, longer studies are still pending.  I truly believe we have been poisoning our dogs for years pumping diseases into them when it wasn't needed.  Vaccines work the same in dogs as they do for people.  Think about lifetime immunity.

We follow Dr. Jean Dodds recommendations with the following modifications.
  1. We are a breeding kennel so dogs routinely come in and out of our kennel, which does increase the risk of possible contamination.
  2. We booster our breeding females for distemper and parvo every three years until they reach the age of 7, then we don't vaccinate them again.  Our males follow the same schedule.
  3. We don't vaccinate for rabies unless endemic to the area, or required by law.
  4. We never vaccinate for rabies before the age of 6 months or 3 pounds. Please keep in mind our babies are tiny... they have such small systems we are very careful before we put a disease knowingly into their tiny immune systems.
  5. We never combine rabies vaccination with any other vaccination.  We always wait at least 1 month after a vaccination before giving the rabies vaccination.
  6. We boost/vaccinate anything coming into our kennel with distemper, parvo and kennel cough.  We also quarentine for 2 weeks. We will vaccinate puppies for kennel cough to eliminate possible sickness especially in multi dog homes. We decide on a case by case basis.
  7. Why do we vaccinate at 4 and 7 years? Simply put, it's a pressure from vets and the public.  People are having trouble getting their minds around the new studies which tell us that vaccines last at least 7.5 years to 15 years and possibly for life.  Old studies said you must re-vaccinate every year.  When the long term results are completed, and data is published we will be able to cut out the 4 and 7 year boosters (hopefully), but until then we have chosen this comprimise from the old knowledge to the new.  We feel comfortable that we have chosen the right path to protect our dogs, and our puppies.
